Assisi , together with Rome and Jerusalem , is the third Holy City of Christianity. Assisi shows itself as a city-sanctuary to everybody who enters: a place where God has manifested and still manifests himself; a world, a movement of the spirit where the human being finds himself in an harmonic synthesis with the others creatures and with creation. Assisi is seen as a message-city, as a small village that was previously walled and closed in itself, and then became an open city without frontiers, an ancient city and a city of the future.
Since Francis and Chiara began to walk on Christ's tracks, the pilgrim's desire of getting closer to the two saints, and discover the secret of their happiness has been growing more and more. Saint Francis represents for the Church and for the humanity of all time, a particular expression of God; he is the Saint that was better able to express the insuppressible nostalgia of God, the communion with every being living under adversity, the prodigious dialogue with all creation. Asssi, in the narration, reveals itself with its ideals of peace, universal brotherhood, simplicity and respect of nature. The Umbrian city lives an atmosphere hanging between sky and land: the serenity, the harmony and the order of the landscape invite your soul to prepare itself for silence and contemplation.
Assisi is a city of boundless culture, a centre of reflection and spiritual meetings that are evidence of its dynamism and its creativity. Today the world sees Assisi more and more as a citadel of peace where Franciscan and lays are devoting themselves to promote missions for all the people, without cultural barriers, and without ethnical and religious distinctions. |
